The Talented Tunde

Tunde and I were classmates in Government at Ojota Secondary School. I had my sights set on winning the prize for Government, and I saw Tony Monye as my main competition. Strangely, I didn’t even consider Taiwo Akintajuwa, who was undeniably a strong contender.
At the end of the first term, Tony led with a score of 88, followed by Tunde with 84. I came in third with 80. Disheartened by my position, I lost interest and became absent from class for some time.
Tunde stood out in many ways—not just for his height, which gave him an imposing presence, but also for his gentle and kind nature. Despite his stature, he treated everyone with respect and humility. In Class 5, he approached me for help with Mathematics, and I agreed to assist. This led me to visit him at his residence in Mile 12. The journey from Ojota to Mile 12 was no small task, but it felt like a normal effort at the time. I explained the concepts as best as I could, and he seemed to genuinely appreciate the time I spent. Before leaving, I was treated to bread and stew—a simple yet memorable gesture that reflected his humility.
Tunde never considered it beneath him to seek my help, and I admired his down-to-earth nature. A few years ago, I ran into him near my home. He was accompanied by two young men, whom I initially assumed were his brothers. To my surprise, he introduced them as his sons. Although we both live in Surulere, that was the only time we crossed paths.
Talented as ever, Tunde partnered with another Tunde—Tunde Mustapha, popularly known as Tunde Amala or Tunde Jackson (now “Bobo So”)—to create a song titled Do You Love School? Reflecting on our school days, who would have guessed Tunde was pursuing such creative endeavors? Today, he continues to thrive in the entertainment industry, following his passion and making a mark.
The entertainment industry thrives on bringing joy to others, and people are often willing to pay for that happiness. However, such happiness can be fleeting, especially when life’s challenges arise. True and lasting joy comes from the Creator of the universe. When He dwells within us, He provides sustenance through His love and joy, even during life’s darkest moments.
