The history of the Ojota Secondary School, 1988 set alumni started the late 90’s, when some former 1988 set classmates tried to gather themselves in a group. However, due to very low turnout, the plan was quickly abandoned. In 2005/2006, Oladimeji Oyetuga decided to give it another try. According to him, he started with just one former classmate he met back then. That one former classmate happened to meet another classmate, who happened to meet another and before long, 32 former graduates of the 1988 set of Ojota Secondary School, Ojota came together to form the first official Alumni of the 1988 graduating set. Immediately, a project committee was set up to outlay the school’s priority needs. The group completed quite a few projects, including borehole, new chairs & tables. Furthermore, the students of the school were given customized notebook and other useful items. The group also awarded one-time monetary scholarships to some of the best senior and junior students.

the Alumni celebrated the 20 years’ anniversary in the school compound with about 60 persons present, including the wives and children of the Alumni members. Also, some former teachers, including the former Principal & Vice-Principal were invited. The event featured a children section with Mickey Mouse, bouncing castle and a DJ for the mums and dads. The occasion was graced with the student’s dance drama team and lots of gift for outgoing seniors. It was about the same time that Zenith bank did some CSR (Corporate Social Responsibility) projects for the school by renovating and painting the buildings. It is worth mentioning that it was no coincidence that a member of the alumni was a staff of Zenith bank as at that time.
After the 20 years’ anniversary, there was a period of standstill. In 2014, building on the previous network, the Alumni was revitalized by Tosin Idowu, this time with the participation of former graduates from the diaspora. The goal was to strengthen the Alumni and expand the network. In 2018, the Alumni organized a series of events to celebrate the 30 years anniversary. As part of the celebration, the Alumni presented the school with a new borehole with a pumping machine. Also, the Alumni renovated and refurnished the staff room with chairs, tables and closets and presented the students and teachers with various school items and gifts. The event also included career speeches and workshops for the students, drama events from the students and awards to the best performing students. The event was rounded up with a grandiose gala and fund-raising dinner for the members and former teachers of the alumni. During that event, the mother Alumni of Ojota Secondary School was inaugurated.
In 2019, in pursuance of the general vision of the association, the constitution and bye laws of the association was drafted by Saheed Olabode Lawal & Tosin Idowu and subsequently adopted by the members in 2020. That same year, 2020 during height of the COVID pandemic and to support members that were affected both professionally and health wise, the association inaugurated a welfare department, an initiative of Saheed Olabode Lawal, with palliatives offered to members. The welfare department is still active today catering for members in need of support. Amongst the good deeds of the welfare department is raising over N600,000 for the further education of the children of a deceased member and also raising over N1,000,000 for the medical cost and eventual burial of the child of a member.
The association has 3 main missions/goals; see to the good of its members, the school and the students. This is being achieved by fostering and encouraging deep social, professional & economical networking among the members, creating a support program to assist the sick and very needy members. The second mission, which is to see to the good of the school is being achieved through our continuous liaison with the school to see areas where we can support materially or otherwise. The last mission is to see to the good of the students. The association presents annual awards and prize money to the best students and supports the school during inter-house competitions. The association plan to introduce scholarship programs to assist the students and to also organize on a regular basis career speeches and workshops for the students.
In 2021, the association started the incorporation process in alignment with the vision of becoming a self-sustainable entity before the year 2028. The process was completed in 2022. In that same year, in order to create more global awareness, the association launched a website and other social media platforms like Facebook, Twitter, Instagram.
The association currently has 73 former graduates, from Africa, Europe and North America that have identified with it and the number is growing. The Association has set for itself the vision of becoming a global self-sustaining non-profit organization before the year 2028. In line with this and other missions, the association is registered with the Corporate Affairs Commission in Abuja, Nigeria as a non-profit organization. The association intends to establish chapters in all parts of the world, where members are represented. The association is governed by a constitution, by-laws and other regulatory policies, all of which have been ratified by members.
As alumni of the 1988 set, we are proud to be flag-bearers of the school all over the world. Many of us are where we are today, mainly because of the commitment and selfless services of our former teachers and administration of the school. It is our intention to make sure that the light of knowledge in OSSO will never burn out.
We appeal to all members, non-members and well-wishers to support and assist us in our goals & missions.
